In addition to the workbook, we use this puzzle map to reinforce the different areas of the US and the capitals. Each knob is placed on the capital of the state, so we pull out some states, mix them up, announce the state and capital as we replace them.
(In DYOCC, this type of puzzle is recommended for fourth grade.)
Now, my oldest can dump out the entire United States and reassemble it without the chart (shown above the map in the previous picture) or the frame. He can also name them all and announce the capital. Occasionally, we also identify the states with our eyes closed. Those western states can be TOUGH.
