At the beginning of the year, I always find that making a “realistic” reading schedule is very important.  If you read aloud at the normal 160 wd/min, which BTW is close to a child’s silent reading speed, then this is how many minutes it takes to read the book aloud.

To MoDG moms: The last four columns show how many days each resource is scheduled in the MoDG syllabi. (Augustus is estimated from Foster’s other books.) 7GRD doesn’t have reading scheduled on FRI specifically.  So, the next to last column is if you add those in.  It cuts down your daily reading time. It is scheduled on Friday in 6GRD.

There are five Herodotus readings and 8 Famous Men of Greece.  They are each scheduled for ONE DAY in the syllabus.  The “creaky old Macaulay” translations on Gutenburg yielded the following:

Herodotus (printable, if you don’t mind the older translation)

Book VII: ~10K words or 1hr
Book VIII (1st assignment): ~6K or 40 min
Book VIII (2nd assignment): ~10K or 1 hr
Book VIII (3rd assignment): ~5K or 30 min
Book IX: ~15K or 90 min

The Famous Men of Greece
‘Draco and Solon’ (~1000)  ~6 min
‘Pisistratus’ (~800) ~ 5 min
‘Lycurgus’ ‘Pericles’ (~2300) ~ 15 min
‘Miltiades, the Hero of Marathon’ (~950) ~6 min
‘Leonidas at Thermopylae’ (~910) ~6 min
‘Themistocles’, ‘Aristides the Just’ and ‘Cimon’ (~3500) ~20min
‘Alcibiades’, ‘Lysander’, ‘Socrates’, ‘Xenophon’, ‘Epaminondas and Pelopidas’ (~5600) ~30 min
‘Philip’ & ‘Alexander’ (2700) ~15 min

Below is the 6GRD pacing:
