#3 How to Generate a KID GRID

My number one tip for homeschool is to bundle your memory work.  Bundle the resources.  Bundle the daily assignments.  Do all the memory work parts of each subject AT ONCE.

My number two tip is to bundle all of the “Do This With Me” parts of the assignments.  Whether that’s the discussion, oral test, checking work, going over problems that were too hard to do alone in math.  All that.

My number three tip is to make a KID GRID.  This is the leftover stuff for each kid after you pull out all the memory work and mama stuff.  Boring things like, “Do Lesson 32″, “Latin Exercise B”, “Write your spelling words.”

These subjects are your routine, every day, no special instructions, predictable stuff that most kids can do alone, or at least make a decent stab at starting alone, after 2nd grade.  I generate one of these grids for each kid.  Until 5th grade, it all fits on one page, but in 5th it takes a front and back.  I put it in a page protector and keep it in my notebook.  I can see the whole year of ALONE WORK at once.  Whenever I do their assignments for the week.  I just fill them in according to the grid.  This can be a lesson plan (my kids favorite is the “loved edwardian” from Donna Young.)

How to do it:

HARD…Hand Copying or Typing Assignments Each Week Without a Kid Grid

  1. Don’t do it.
  2. It’s really annoying.
  3. It’s lots of page flipping.

BETTER…Writing a Master Kid Grid.

  1. Figure out how many columns and rows you need.
  2. Make a form on Word or Excel.
  3. Code in only those things they are doing without you, or near you.
  4. Scan it so you don’t have to do it next time you have that grade.

BEST…Typing a Grid.

  1. Get in excel.
  2. Most of these lesson are in numerical order, so copy and paste away.
  3. Scale it to fit on one page and print.

All three of these steps may sound like a pain, but once it’s done, kid you not, the year goes like BUTTER.  1)Turn memory work into it’s own class.  2)Consolidate all the Mama subjects.  3) Make yourself a year of lesson numbers so you can knock that joker out with two seconds notice.  “What?  You can find your assignment book?  Lemme jot it on a post-it.”  One Mississippi, two Mississippi, DONE.
